SAN FRANCISCO, January 18, 2006 __ Two African American activists and the leading voice for pro-life feminism in the country will lead thousands of peaceful walkers along San Francisco’s waterfront under the banner "Women Deserve Better than Abortion" in the Walk for Life West Coast Saturday, January 21^st.

"Black women constitute 7 percent of the American population yet account for more than 35 percent of our abortions," said Star Parker, a former welfare mom who had four abortions before turning her life around to become a political commentator and founder of the Coalition on Urban Renewal and Education. "There's no way that a rubber stamp on Roe v. Wade is a pro-black stance," said Parker

Parker, Feminists for Life of America President Serrin Foster, and Rev. Clenard Childress, Ph.d., founder of BlackGenocide.org, are the three main speakers at the Walk, held this year on the eve of the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.

Last year’s inaugural Walk drew 7,500 walkers. Organizers expect more this year, with walkers coming from as far away as Alaska, Washington State, Texas and Florida, said fourth generation San Franciscan Dolores Meehan, Walk co-chair. In 2005,the peaceful pro-woman, pro-life walkers endured spitting, egg-throwing and lewd gestures by 1,000 counter demonstrators who lined the route.

"Abortion is a reflection that we have not met the needs of women," says pro-life feminist speaker Foster, who called for reaching out to abortion rights supporters on the bridge of services for women. The Walk theme of "Women Deserve Better than Abortion" is the signature slogan of Feminists for Life.

Women and children are victimized by the abortion industry, which is sailing falsely under the banner of civil rights, says African American Baptist minister Childress, North East regional director of the Life Education and Resource Network. Martin Luther King Jr., writing from the Birmingham jail, called upon his brothers and sisters in the movement to assume the courage of the early Christians who under penalty of death rescued infants left to die on the Roman streets, Childress noted. Abortion, a modern day infanticide, is not a civil right for anyone, Rev. Childress said.

"Like from Selma to Montgomery the Walk for Life parallels the same cause–we are speaking for a people that cannot speak for themselves. A people who have been disenfranchised, silenced and abused," Childress said of the children destroyed by abortion, an act which damages women lured by its false promises. "Our women have been victimized by the abortion industry more than any other institution since our inception as a nation."

MEDIA NOTE: This event is for Saturday, Jan. 21, because this is the closest Saturday to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade ruling.

Location: Justin Herman Plaza at the foot of Market at the Ferry Building in San Francisco

Time: 11 a.m.: Walk will begin at approximately 12 noon and proceed along the Embarcadero, ending at Marina Green where there will be an Info Fair with pregnancy resources.
